After I wrote that post I came across this in the Post:

Reader query: Many people could not afford to quit their jobs in the early stages of the pandemic — so how are they able to meet expenses when they leave their jobs? Savings, borrowing, self-owned businesses, public assistance, lifestyle changes? Write me at work.advice.wapo@gmail.com and share your strategy.
Of course, the Post probably doesn't reach the cohort that has me curious. It would be those who moved in with their folks or couples, like you say, who are getting along on one salary or people who are maxing out their charge cards, not those who can't scrape together $400 for an emergency.

BTW, I had breakfast this morning in a local 4-restaurant diner chain. There was a notice at the table saying they offer paid vacation, life insurance, health insurance, and a 401K. A diner! There's a help-wanted sign out front. The sign outside has been there for some time. Only just noticed the one on the table.
