Yep. I think that if the (not so)Civil War hadn't of happened, slavery would have eventually become non-viable in the South. It was already on the knife edge by the mid-1800s. Sharecropping was a better deal for the plantation owners and it opened their pool of exploitables to poor whites. Like with the company towns in the North, it would have had most of the benefits of chattel slavery without the associated costs. With minimal sunken costs, it was a no-brainer to cut the less productive loose.
