You don't have to wait for an uptick to short, and you don't have to watch the screen constantly. Let's say a stock is 20 bid X 20 1/4 asked, and is on a downtick. Just place a limit sell order for, say, 20 1/8. As long as the limit price is higher than the CURRENT bid (and assuming the MM will buy between the spread, which is more often the rule than the exception with Datek) you can sell short on the downtick.
