Dan,

No, that would mean added income and the tax consequences are most unpleasant :-)

Seriously, it does appear that they are holding a healthy amount of cash. This is in line with their statements that they should have enough to get to profitability and thus should not need to have another stock offering.

Once Ligand actually makes money, I sincerely hope they will plow it all right back into research. Their signaling technology is likely to be key to a number of future drugs, but it is going to take money to keep the researchers going. In the long run, focused research has *always* paid off and I do not see that changing.

I wonder what the market will say tomorrow.... Anyone able to see if there is after hours trading going on?

Cheers, Torben

Dan:

Perhaps they'll use some of it to pay down long term debt. Last year they spent $8.1M in interest payments. That was partially offset by $3.7M in interest income. Notice that their long term debt is still $14.853M (down from $19.961M). Obviously they're paying a higher interest rate on their LT debt in comparison with the income their cash ($82M) is generating. It's mostly invested in government instruments, per their last annual report.
