I think as screwed up as management has been, they are making some good moves. Clearly if Intel, AMD, etc were bidding on these patents, they are of some importance. If their patent can supercede Intel's, which I read it possibly can, Intel may have to pay S3 royalties on all future processors. This would basically be on ever PC sold with this generation of processor. Further, who know what is in the CRUS patents. If S3 was supposedly violating them, other graphic chip makers probably were too. Of course, they could actually be trying to expand their business into a new area with the processor patents. Those that say they can't compete because of Intel's size are ignoring many David and Goliath stories in the business arena. All of this is not to say I think any of these things WILL happen, just that it is POSSIBLE.
