Microsoft won't eat humble Java pie news.com It all started with an email Microsoft product manager Craig Beilinson sent out to reporters Monday that outlined the company's position on Java and addressed Netscape's recent downsizing of its Java development staff. Here's where the "greatly exaggerated" part comes flying in faster than a sacred offering of Belgian dairy product. Beilinson wrote: "By now, you are probably aware that Netscape is dropping much of its in-house Java development and laying off all of its Java developers as part of its recently announced downsizing effort." Wait a second. "All?" Not according to Netscape, which insists it's still brewing an all-Java Navigator, as well as some server-side Java. A brief interruption to avoid fragmenting and fracturing the integrity and uniformity of the following paragraph. Another member of the press division seems to have gotten hit by one of the standard ad hominems hurled by Microsoft types at the least provocation. This is ironic, as near as I can tell Bill's the commie now, central planning, rewriting history, the whole works. He's taking us where we want to go! Personality cults, that's sort of a commie thing too, isn't it?When a fellow NEWS.COMmie asked him to cite his sources, Beilinson pulled a rope-a-dope, first saying he knew about the layoffs from reporters calling for quotes. Then he credited Netscapees looking for jobs at Microsoft and finally referred to other "sources in the Bay Area." Only after pulling his foot out of the bucket did he clarify that he was referring to Netscape's Java Virtual Machine developers in his email, rather than Netscape's entire Java staff. Quelle difference, non? I don't say much about Java these days. My impression of the Netscape Java stories was that they were going to go with the Sun implementation, which makes perfect sense. Not exactly a surprise that the TRUTH seekers at Microsoft would put a different spin on it, but that's life. Embrace and Demolish and all that. Cheers, Dan
