The way I see it, you can't play all stocks the same, so 8%
would be a mistake with some stocks.
I had a discussion with a broker today about a certain stock.
He thinks it should be held and not sold on a large rise. I say
it should. Because it will drop back down and then I could pick
it back up. His last suggestion was to split the investment and
see which way ends up as the best way to play it. I think both
could work, but of course, one will work better. I figured it
like being diversified in the same stock!

NEWS STORY STOCKS (PART III)

A good story should propel the price at a quick pace over 10% depending on the price. Many "good" stories will only move the stock 1/4 of a point before it starts to sell off. That does not leave much room for one to enter and exit with a significant profit.

Keeping an accurate record of specific stock movements will soon make you an expert at rating the momentum strength a story will have on a stock. I look for GREAT stories that propel a stock at percentages over 20%, but knowing the impact good stories has on a stock will prepare you for the great ones that always come along soon or later.

Many times the impact is also dependent on the sector the stock is in.

I use a news scanner where I can put in keywords to give me news ALERTS. Here are some sample keywords I program into my news scanner:

[UNEXPECTED] [FDA] [APPROVAL] [PATENT] [EARNINGS] [PACT] [SUITS]

There are many news sources such as PR Newswire, BusinessWire, Reuters, and Dow Jones News Service. Be sure you get "REAL TIME NEWS" and not a cheaper delayed source. I have found the best mover of stocks is the Dow Jones Real Time News.

NEWS STORY STOCKS (Part IV)

I have made it a practice to watch CNBC all day long. CNBC is a tremendous source of gathering information. Anytime I hear a story on a particular stock, I put the stock on my quote screen. A good story will cause the stock price to go up and it can be traded like any "good story" stock.

Many times the story will be repeated after the market closes which will cause an overnight run up.

It's a good idea to have a list of companies with their symbols to take advantage of the times when CNBC will only mention the company and not the symbol.
