Samsung's New 2X DVD-ROM Drive Can Play CD-RW Discs

Samsung Electronics America's Information Systems Division has introduced the SDR-230 2X DVD-ROM drive. According to the company, it is one of the first drives on the market that plays CD-RW discs as well as all other available formats (DVD-ROM, DVD-Video, CD-R, CD-ROM, audio CD). The SDR-230 achieves compatibility with CD-R and CD-RW discs with its Annular Mask Pick-Up, a one-lens/two-laser system. The drive provides an MPEG-2 full-motion video signal and an AC-3 surround sound audio signal, plus access times of 150ms for DVD-ROM and 100ms for CD-ROM, and data transfer rates of 2,760KB/sec for DVD-ROM and 3,600KB/sec for CD-ROM. It reads CD-ROMs at speeds up to 24X.
