The NFL has been actively trying to take the kickoff out of the game, and it has been pretty successful so far. However, people like Bill Belichick, who looks for an edge in special teams, started training their kickers to kick it to the 2-yard line and force a return that they could possibly stop before the 25-yard line. The fairly recent development of punters being athletes has also enabled fewer returns, making that play much less dangerous to players.
