I'm not so sure I would characterize LSI's deal for the Sony PlayStation chip as having "the contract for 98 and 99".

If LSI does not build the 32 bit PlayStation chip no one will.

-----

Therefore the issue is what happens to the next generation when Sony wants to go to the 64 bit version chip?

Further the other question is when will Sony go to the next generation chip?

Or will Sony do away with the video game machine and build some combination device?

Well LSI more than likely will play some role - how big no one knows.

----

But the empirical evidence is good:

Sony is thrilled with the current version
Sony has a long relationship with LSI - 5 years and counting
Sony liked LSI enough to go to LSI for Sony's DVD chip
Corrigan said LSI was involved in the next gen. chip acc. to those who
listened to the previous quarter's c.call

----

And finally the current version is selling strong so why needlessly introduce the 64 bit version too early? Does this therefore mean LSI will still be producing the 32 bit in 1998? Almost certainly. In 1999? Highly likely. The new gen. maybe begins in mid-to-late 1999 or 2000?

Do we know for sure? NO! Sony is tight-lipped and LSI is tight-lipped.
Probably neither wants to tip their hand. Maybe it's like when new computers are introduced. Once people know they'll postpone buying.

----

Had seen something that SONY was pushing out the 64 bit chip to 2000 but can't verify.

----

Heck there is a third scenario. Sony just builds an integrated STB, PlayStation, DVD etc etc etc... machine. If this were the case LSI would certainly get the whole enchilada just because they have such good knowledge of all these areas.

----

Remember these consumer electronics gadgets have long lives! And generally once an ASIC company has signed on a customer the question is really what happens for future business not for "contracts" for following year's business. That's a done deal.
