Hi Jim, >>99% of all these "utility" vehicles will never see anything more punishing or challenging than a gravel driveway...<<

Isn't that the truth - actually, they don't even see a gravel driveway. I don't own one, but several friends do - for commuting the freeways.

>>Hey, who wants an energy efficient electric car when you can have a 300hp gas guzzling, all terrain, side mounted gattling gun optioned semi automatic personel transport_ to pick up the kids and a bag of groceries!<<

It's 'funny' you say this. Maybury points out that "the best shorts are likely to be the autos. Even during the economic boom they're using only 65% of their production capacity (I'm not sure of this #), and they have a hidden kicker to the downside. They've become dependent on their new fad, the high-markup SUV, which boasts the same weight and has mileage as an armored personnel carrier. When the next big war hits the Persian Gulf, these gas guzzlers will hemorrhage red ink."

If an extended war does hit the PG, I'd rather be long the oils than shorting autos.

I very much agree with this statement by Maybury. "Saddam Hussein is not the only cutthroat in Iraq. If he is killed, he will be replaced by someone as bad or worse. The same for Iran's Khameini and every other ruler in the Persian Gulf. The lives of all the thousands of royal family members together are not worth the life of one American soldier. The Gulf is a powderkeg with a burning fuse, and the only rational course for the US is to get neutral, but no one in Washington even talks about neutrality." - especially Newt!

Have a great weekend. El Nino is upon us.
