If you want to go the drug route, then the analogy should be is it better to be dependent on insulin or heroin (or hard liquor if you think heroin is too harsh). It's not as if the gold standard was not killing the economy. It was just killing it differently.

The market boom of 1900 timeframe was to a good measure due to the expansion of the monetary base. Expanding monetary base in those days meant discovering gold in Alaska. Do you have any idea what a havoc the sudden expansion of the monetary base unleashed on the financial markets? I take the Fed's "manipulations" over that anytime!
