One of my first jobs included giving okay to short approvals. If someone wanted to short a stock, had to check custody and control reports that indicated if we had loanable securities. If someone wanted to short 5000 shares, I marked it on the report and sent a wire that it was okay. If we didn't have an excess (calculated every night from a formula involving margin accounts) then I'd call the loan desk to see if the could borrow them.

We were fastidious on it and the regulators and auditors checked it. If we fell under custody, we had to buy in the short. I later went to work in internal audit and did a lot of checking on the process and the governing programs.

However, I don't doubt there was abuse. I wrote an audit routine in the 70's that would have caught what Madoff was doing. It was pretty simple to catch but the auditors and regulators never looked at it even though several tipsters had alerted them that it was fraudulent.

Some firms wouldn't allow you to pick and chose which securities were margined (we did). You just had to maintain sufficient margin in the account.

Bannon hits on Musk a lot (mainly because of the metaverse) but I agree that he likes to put it to the commies.

I suspect the fbi clowns are monitoring this site. They need to be shut down. I rode cross country with an fbi agent who was more conservative than i was but it seems they are hiring a diverse group (unqualified).

I have crashed a lot but only once hit my helmet. I do a good tuck and roll and never put out my arms to brace a crash. I used to have a quarter horse and he fell on me. He rolled up my leg and I couldn't get that foot out of the stirrups. Last time I rode a horse...

You're right about the housing bubble. I should have used the word preceded rather than precipitated.
This statement made me think about a phone call I received today.

I get about 20 calls a day by Indian Call Centers wanting to know if i want a "cash offer" on one of my multiple rental properties or primary residence, HOWEVER I received an interesting VM today.

It was from a well spoken American lady claiming she represented multiple private equity firms and they were looking to make offers on all my properties and she actually had the number of houses I own.

I've been receiving these type of calls for probably 3 years, but this one was the first of this type where someone claiming to represent a private equity firm and referenced the number of properties I own.

Now I'm wondering if this type of activity is PRECEDING or PRECIPITATING the next crisis.

Inquiring minds.......
