Zimmerman was an entirely different thing. I would not have acquitted him. The law should take all the present circumstances into account. There should be no collective punishment or trend analysis under the law, though unfortunately it happens sometimes. On your bigger point - it is doubtful that the civilization you are thinking of ever existed in America. There were pockets of it and they eb and flow along the major social trends. But on the whole, I believe most Americans are oblivious to America and its values, trends, etc; they live in their own bubbles. When someone says this is not America, they really mean that they are confronted with an alternate perspective that was always there but they were unaware of. On the plus side, comparing the US today with the US before 1960s, there is a big difference and the trend is on the good side.
