I think what I described in my post is accurate...

The word conservative can mean anything, the word democrat describes exactly what I described in my post...

The political party that wanted slavery was the democrats... there were other political parties at the time, the republican party began with Abe Lincoln...

Before Lincoln there were the Whigs who favored a more active government role in the promotion of business and economic development, e.g., building roads, promoting commerce and manufacturing, stronger currency, and so on... they wanted to abolish slavery completely...

The Democrats at the time, mostly southern landowners and slave owners, didn't want any government interference with their slave ownership policies...

Both parties experienced internal divisions as the interests of eastern states and western states differed, and especially with growing tensions between the North and South over slavery...

John Adams, a close friend of George Washington, was very much against any slave ownership, Adam's son John Quincy Adams was also a very strong advocate against slavery...

There was a very broad movement from the very beginning against slavery, but the southern democrats fought to keep slavery as a part of their economy, they wanted the cheapest labor they could find and slavery was their answer to cheap labor to work in their cotton fields...

This is who and what the democrats are and have been from the very beginning, no matter how much they want to deny it, this is who and what they always have been...
