Many, many moons ago I narrowly escaped an avalanche in the Italian Dolomites. 6 of our group of 10 didn’t. All but 2 were found alive largely thanks to avalanche dogs which were lowered on ropes with their handlers from helicopters as there was no close landing spot. These dogs were truly amazing. They located people within minutes of their arrival. Without these dogs none of these people would have made it out alive. Something very good came out of this incident … One of the people rescued was a rather wealthy individual who has since donated millions to the training of not just rescue dogs but to the training to many different types of service dogs.
