Two things:

First and most importantly, the purpose was not to discuss INCY. When we were discussing BABA, you seemed to have difficulty grasping how the MA and some technicals change after the fact to provide a neat picture of should have been done. I was trying to help you clear your mind with this chart. If you take a screenshot of it now, and compare this exact moment in time with how it is reflected a month from now, you will see a difference should INCY keep going up.

Secondly, I look all the same parameters you mentioned, in about the same order, if and only if I intend to hold a position for a long time. And especially if I am making a value play.

But there is no point in doing so if you are looking at a startup, a momentum play, or a short-term swing trade. For example the 5 year chart of TSLA will tell nothing of importance (beyond how much you missed) because Tesla today is in a very different position than Tesla of 5 years ago. This information is relevant for say FCX, but not TSLA.

I'd like to keep my long ES position overnight, but I like a good night sleep even better. So good night and we can catch up in the morning.

If in the morning ES is above 4630, and then it doesn't drop below 4620, then the sell off may be over...at least till the end of the week. But it is still too shaky to be trusted. So I am going to close and sleep.

cheers,

Let's revisit INCY and the point that I was making, b/c now you can see that point clearly. Here's the current chart of INCY schrts.co It tells you that on December 10, it was the perfect time to buy INCY. The 20DMA just crossed above the 50 and the MACD just kissed and pointed up. INCY is up ~15% since.

But if you recall what I was telling you and showing you at the time, none of this was true then. The MA had not crossed over and the MACD was pointing downwards making it look like it is more likely to fall than to rise.

So to recap my point, when dealing with lagging indicators, the picture changes after the fact to make it seem so very obvious what the right thing to do was. Which is to say you cannot drive forward by looking through the rearview mirror.

PS I am still holding on to my INCY position and I've added LH in the same space.
