I find it puzzling (makes no sense) as well....that they were all found together, with water, especially the dog suffering the same fate. I really thought the idea that they got water from a toxic algal bloom in the river made more sense.

It's the rule, rather than the exception, for temps in that area to get between 105 - 115 in the summer. Zero humidity, so it cools nicely in the evening (find some shade and mosey out after the sun goes down). It's definitely tolerable out of the direct sunlight.

They were transplants from the Bay area, so.....

If you really want to test your mettle, try Furnace Cr/Mosaic Canyon in Death Valley mid-year. Didn't really impact me, but Wife was really wondering if she was going to have a stroke (120-130 F).
