Cable Operator TCI Embarks on Silicon Quest

The nation's largest cable operator, TCI [TCOMA], says it is searching for a microprocessor to drive its planned OpenCable set-top box.

The company announced those plans after inking agreements with Sun Microsystems [SUNW] and Microsoft [MSFT] last month to provide an OS for its set-tops.

The company will consider a number of microprocessor options and focus on further development of its initial suite of applications, TCI said. In addition, it's focusing on the continued rollout of digital service and hopes to reach two-thirds of its 14.3 million subscribers by the end of the winter.

Deployment of cable modem markets is taking a backseat to the digital rollout as the company focuses on rebuilding its plant and upgrading for two-way @Home [ATHM] service. TCI said it will roll out cable modem markets more aggressively in the latter part of '98.
