The system was a compromise between election of the President by members of Congress and election by popular vote.

The underlying reason this compromise was produced was likely because of the economic power base but smaller voting base that slavery provided. It was economic power, and counting slaves as 3/5ths of a person gave the states with large slave populations larger political power relative to their voting population.

With the larger number of congressional representatives due to the 3/5ths number, the slave state votes were essentially over-representing the voting population, but not the total population and economic base.

We don't have slavery anymore, and today the electoral collage gives greater political power and say to low population states like Wyoming, Montana, and the Dakotas and less to states like California.

It was designed that way on purpose. Otherwise, the population dense cities could tax based on acres and pay low taxes on huge profits from small footprint factories while a low income farm would pay enormous taxes. This is just one example but it shows the basic idea behind it.
We aren't a true democracy and were never meant to be. We are a republic. A balance of city, rural etc.
We are also fast approaching the point we were warned about in regards to once the majority of people figure out they can vote for welfare, we're doomed.
