Ukraine is a large country with over 43 million population - and declining (The country's population has been declining since the 1990s because of a high emigration rate, coupled with high death rates and low birth rates. — Wiki).

It’s stuck being a strategically important barrier between the large, paranoid Eurasian power - Russia - and the West. On top of that, it has very little experience of being an independent nation. The only period in its history when they were independent in a relatively sustained way was since the demise of the USSR.

Unfortunately, their government and ruling classes ever since independence, remained kind of thuggish - and subject to manipulation from both the East and the West. The smart strategy for them would have been to remain as neutral as possible - and let both East and West compete for every crumb of influence they may get. Instead, they seem to be fighting over which side to choose and to stick with - while either choice will do nothing for them, only put them in danger.
