Gates takes one for Microsoft news.com Here's another take on that incident. It's hard enough for the Netscapes and the Suns and the Novells to keep fighting the good fight in the market place. But now it would seem that these companies and their leaders have to surmount Bill Gates's prestige as well. The pie incident shouldn't obscure the fact that Gates was in Europe to bend ears and twist arms of heads of state, and they rolled out the red carpet for him. This royal treatment by not only the Belgian government but the European Union is surely the untold story of how Gates and Microsoft continue to make competitors eat their dust. As far as security goes, there's another way to look at it. In the circles Bill moves in, the normal nutcase types will stick out like a sore thumb. Well, maybe not at Comdex, but at the Montgomery Securities thing or off shmoozing with the EU guys, the Ted Kozynskis of the world would attract a bit of attention. Day of the Jackal-style smooth professional assassins, do they really exist? All the attempts I recall in the US have been nutcases. Europe has had some hard-core political hits in the past, but it's been awhile. It's not like Bill's off walking the streets by himself in the bad part of town, or negotiating with the Columbian drug lords. There's risks everywhere in life, but the risks decline a lot when you get into sufficiently rarified circles. I think the pie thing may have been a set-up. The pie guy leader is a big celebrity. Just because security measures aren't visible doesn't mean they don't exist. Bill wasn't the only bigshot around there. Cheers, Dan.
