In a challenging year, this was the best audio for creating a barrier between my brain and reality.

What does it mean to learn to sit with oneself? I wouldn’t know, because I’ve spent the last year of my life doing exactly the opposite and rejecting silence at all costs. Thanks to the devilish ingenuity of my trusty AirPods, I spend most of my waking hours with a steady drip of content streaming into my head. I write about music professionally, but, oftentimes, music—particularly pop music—doesn’t feel appropriate for the mundanity of puttering around my apartment or running errands. Thankfully, there’s no shortage of alternative types of music and audio that will aid in creating a barrier between my brain and reality. Call it ambiance, background noise, forms of distraction, imaginary friends—these are the podcasts, YouTube channels, and electronic or ambient albums that kept me company this year. Silence is overrated!
