<<TA>> We have been outperforming the S&P the last few days (not today of course). Is this significant? If so, why?
I have also noticed this pattern of the techs rise when we fall and visa-versa. What would be a good index to follow for the techs to study this phenonmenon?

To Thread:
Does anyone know the actual time to drill a "typical" offshore well in the Gulf? Are most of these deep wells or fairly shallow (not water depth)? Back in the good old boom days when I worked at Shell and we drilled deep holes in Anadarko basin (Oklahoma) it took 6-12 months or more to drill a single 15000 ft. hole. I would guess that the targets of current projects are likely to be deep and take a long time to drill. If this is true this should give additional reasons why this sector is poised for long term growth.

RIG will report a one time charge for exiting the Gulf of
Mexico turnkey business. Although this is speculation on
my part, I believe that they will meet or beat expectations
after factoring out the effects of the one time charge.

Notwithstanding that most of us haven't heard of these guys, I do personally like the fact that some major houses of late have all recommended stocks I own: NE, MDCO, GLM.

I didn't get much help for RON, though.

Anything positive in this sector (known house to us or not) helps. It's much better than earning estimate downgrades, or rating changes to neutral, by far.

However, you are right. Their upgrades came earlier and throughout the day (MDCO was first) and might have sparked some early upward momentum, but it didn't last.

Thean,<<TA>>

Prediction:
After listening to Bill & Tony do their thing today....
1.The rest of the world is saying "Hands Off" on Iraq. Bill & Tony are only bluffing...Bill is trying to save face as "tailgate" heats up.I expect a resolution soon which will correct this sector temporarily.
2.The candle charts show that buying momentum left the OSX yesterday.I did not get back in today, although I do maintain cdg, ne, and gw call options that may still be worth something in a month or so.
3.I am looking for a correction down on Monday to at least OSX 101-102.More so if #1 occurs by then.

For those that doubt the usefullness of TA, I have found that learning it & using it the last three months has helped me avoid even more substantial losses than I would have otherwise incurred if I hadn't started using it to figure out why this sector was dropping back in Nov.Since applying the basics that I now use, I have managed to make about 300% return before taxes either daytrading or short term(on week max) since jan 1. I am still down 40% since Oct. 97. But I was way down 6 weeks ago.I have found(personally) that my crash course(out of dire necessity!) has helped me gain discipline, use caution, and reverse my trades from losses to gains.Everyone has their own style.TA is working for me.I want to thank all the long term investors that continually point out the great fundamental of these companies. That is my "comfort zone" if you will that keeps me here.I would like nothing better that to trade up enough to become a long term investor and just write those calls every month. This "in & out" trading is exciting & profitable but time consuming.

Thanks to the thread,

PK

FWIW, I received my monthly fax alert from Nevellier's MPT review yesterday and he had sells on RON, ESV, FLC, PTEN, UTI, DO, CDG, EVI, KEG from his model portfolios leaving only, I believe, HLX, SCSWF, GMRK, PKD, & MAVK in his models. He has held a lot of drillers and service companies the last year and a half and this is the biggest sell off I remember. He has a good following and he could have put some drag on these stocks today.
