Yeah, that was a one-off opportunity for growth like many countries saw post WWII. I didn't see what Eastern Europe looked like during the Cold War, but I sure saw all the changes in China from the 80's to now.

You hardly ever saw passenger cars on the roads in the 80's in China! Now it's gridlock with cars there!

In the 80's at 6:00PM, the city streets would be ringing to the sounds of bicycle bells, as people never spoke to others when riding bikes. They communicated when someone was too close through the bells.

It used to drive me nuts to see about 99% of the single speed bikes around the cities being ridden with tires that were about 50% under-inflated. If they just pumped their tires, they'd have a lot easier time riding their bikes.
