<<Layoffs can be healthy>> Agreed, in fact, they very often are, but I'm afraid, in this specific instance, the market will see this as another sign of continued near-term weakness and it will hit the whole sector short-term.

The situation in semi equipment stocks is so fluid and difficult to grasp, with all the "big money" boys not wanting to miss the boat during the likely major boom in the future, but also not wanting to ride declining issues sideways and/or down for a long time. I really think a bad earnings announcement from AMAT will spike the sector for a while -- even if they meet the numbers, an additional confirmation of serious near-term weakness, including hard evidence in the form of personnel downsizing might cause a 20% fall over all.

Everyone, I think, agrees that at SOME POINT there is going to be another major upswing, with DUV coming online and, at some point, 300mm refits. It's like a herd of cattle -- anything could spook the market in either direction.
