The individual in question has lived in BC and Chile for decades - loves the place - works in mining related industry and is far from stupid or reactionary. The whole group of them have worked all over the world and have intimate knowledge of pretty much every jurisdiction that holds internationally operating mines.
I have heard of one case where a mine got taken over and they were not allowed back on the property to pick up their personal items and are left trying to get out of the country - which at times comes down to a private plane on a remote road- all arranged out of an office in Vancouver. Passports get seized - imagine driving home from work and your house is full of military vehicles - smart move is to put your head down and drive on by and say goodbye to whatever you had there.
So on the surface the gringos may look like idiots but behind the scenes there is very often a ton of stuff going on as the industry points out the mine can not run without certain people or contracts in place.

off for a whee walk
