Microsoft, DirecTV reportedly halt joint development

February 6, 1998

------------------------------------------------------------------------

InfoWorld Electric via Individual Inc. : Microsoft and DirecTV are no longer working together to develop a PC that would enable satellite television channels to be broadcast alongside Web content, according to published reports.

According to the online site of Satellite Direct magazine, the satellite company will develop DirecTV Interactive itself and deliver the product this year.

Neither Microsoft nor DirecTV immediately responded to phone calls to confirm or deny this report.

The magazine quotes Ed Huguez, DirecTV's vice president of the new media and interactive group, as saying the company will provide Microsoft with its development plans so it can be compatible with Windows 98.

No launch date was given for DirecTV Interactive.

Huguez also told the magazine his company may offer a set-top box in 1999 to provide Internet access via its Digital Satellite System.

The partnership between the companies began in March 1996, but DirecTV wanted to launch its product as soon as possible, whereas Microsoft wanted to time the product closer to the introduction of Windows 98, Huguez said.

Microsoft Corp., in Redmond, Wash., is at microsoft.com. DirecTV Inc., a division of Hughes Electronic Corp., in Los Angeles, is at directv.com.
