I think of McConnell, whose motivations are questionable on his best days -- and he was working against Trump almost all of the four years. I truly do blame both sides of the House & Senate, and from my POV, Republicans were worried about preserving their personal power. It was about left and right, but at the same time, about protecting personal gains. Meanwhile, the media consumed the Republican party and spit it out. So, I agree with your suggestion that they were mostly defensive. Trump was far from being perfect but he made up for that imperfection by questioning government. Which is, after all, the biggest problem of all. You have to understand my perspective, however -- I do not see government as a force for good. It was at one time but today it is just a terrible drain. In my view.
