John, nice pick-up. Niles hasn't been too high on my list, but compared to the underwriters' analysts, he's at least looking relatively better.

Niles sees DRAM prices falling 30 percent sequentially in the
current quarter, and expects Micron to guide second-quarter estimates
lower in the next few weeks

IMHO, his expectations re: DRAM price activity are SIGNIFICANTLY less interesting than his expectations for the company's activity re: guidance.

The Motley Fool had a great piece that touches on the subject of guidance back in January of 1997. I would strongly urge anyone who is a shareholder of this or any publicly traded company to read it.

As a bear, I guess I'm supposed to read Niles' statements re: expectations of guidance and be happy. I'm not. I find the entire notion of "guidance" to be grossly unfair to the small investor.

Questions for MU:
Was guidance given on the August 1997 quarter AFTER Kip Bedard's presentation at the Robertson Stephens conference?
If so, what was the date?
What information was conveyed?
Who conveyed it?
Who received it?

I ask this only because it seems that your stock peaked @ 60 1/16 in early-August, and then several days later numerous analysts lowered their numbers and their ratings. Are we to believe that these individuals in the span of 48 hours all looked at their files of research on the company and simultaneously leapt to the same conclusion in the total absence of any form of "guidance" in the days leading up to these estimate and ratings changes?

Good trading,

Tom
