"He could have told them to stand down. He could have told them to go home – and he failed to do so," Cheney continued.

WEDNESDAY 1/6/2021 12:56 p.m.

A day that’s usually just ceremonial in the U.S. has taken a dramatic turn as protesters have forced their way into the U.S. Capitol as Congress convened to hold a vote to affirm President-elect Joe Biden’s victory.

President Donald Trump took to Twitter shortly after 12:30 p.m. saying, “Please support our Capitol Police and Law Enforcement. They are truly on the side of our Country. Stay peaceful!”

Over a half hour later, Pres. Trump tweeted again, saying “I am asking for everyone at the U.S. Capitol to remain peaceful. No violence!”

Trump: “You have to go home now, we have to have peace, we have to have law and order, we have to respect our great people in law and order. We don’t want anybody hurt.”

“But we can’t play into the hands of these people,” the president continues. “We have to have peace. So go home, we love you, you’re very special, you’ve seen what happens, you’ve seen the way others are treated that are so bad and so evil. I know how you feel, but go home, and go home in peace.”

President Trump called on supports to “Stay peaceful!” earlier in the day as supporters forced their way into the U.S. Capitol
