Not only that, but even some of the senators who voted against convicting him acknowledged that the case against him was made, they just didn't see why convicting him would accomplish anything.

And, even more important of course, they were afraid that a vote in favor of conviction would lead to them being primaried.

A successful impeachment results in removal from office. A failed impeachment results in status quo.
