<<The Monarchy is so important to unity - not so sure.>>

Britain's success was built on the Royalty. It's further success came from it's Parliament, common law, and the role of Royalty not to interfere in politics.

All this smudged the reign of power. Of course big money rules supreme but British traditions meant they were lots of hoops to be jumped through before things could change.

That did help keep the decision making on track regarding Britains interests.

Prince Charles has seen it fit to upset the boat. In addition, the loss of Empire and markets, including manufacturing, mean the country is now more unstable compared to former years.Quite honestly, I think the immigrants from former colonies are help keeping Britain "British". They seem to fit right in.

The monarchy has always had it's critics. Fact is though, they do some important functions and do pull in tourism. What would we replace them with? We have diplomacy and other functions normally performed by a President all in place. Could be the cheaper option. Also the critics, and everyone else up to about Covid, have openly been allowed to express their opinion. The hallmark of British life. You could have your say. Not any longer. Huge change.

Russia got rid of the Tsars. Is Putin & co a cheaper and a better solution?

Ummm ? Maybe best leave USA out of discussion, -g-

I am not really a supporter of the Monarchy, but just being realistic.
