I agree, I'm not sure why gay couples want to call their union marriage. They could come up with another term which would have the same meaning and be legally binding.

This is one of many area's I see the gay rights movement falling on it's face. It's this in your face accept me attitude which turns allot of people off.

I believe the State of Washington is attempting a proactive approach to this issue because gay couples are moving here from Hawaii and wanting to claim married status for state benefits. (I'm not sure what those benefits are though)

Most people I believe today accept if a person is gay or not without much reservation. Basically they feel "hey if that's the way they want to live fine". Unfortunately marriage falls into that "in your face accept me area"

We are having a tough enough time holding marriages together in society today without this type of intrusion into it's meaning. IMHO

I could be in the minority opinion here though....:-) Go figure??

Holly, something else occurred to me while thinking about this gay marriage issue. There are other forms of parenting or sharing love which the state doesn't legally recognize as marriage. Polygamy for one, and marrying ones off-spring.

I think the same sort of arguments for these type of arrangements could be made regarding same sex marriages.

One of the problems in society today, and you see it here on Feelings quite often, is when people have an honest disagreement. The immediate response by some people is to try and label that person religious far right, extremist, or liberal or whatever.

It's kinda sad that so many people in the country have fallen into this simplistic labelling and blaming game.

I don't think it does any good when trying to open the lines of communication and understanding.

The Politically correct crowd has used this technique in order to stifle allot of free speech in this country. I believe to our detriment.
