3Com's stock edged up 19 cents to $32.88 on the Nasdaq stock market Friday
after falling sharply Thursday. Analysts have raised questions about a glut of
existing 3Com high-speed modems as the company begins shipping new
products that meet the new standard.

Stock in Rockwell International Corp., the other major modem company, rose
$2 Friday to $59.75 on the New York Stock Exchange. Rockwell makes
computer chips for other makers of modems.

Few in the industry expect the coming boom in 56K modem sales to last long.
Communications companies are experimenting with other technologies for
Internet connections -- including cable modems and digital subscriber lines
-- that operate at much higher speeds.
