In the late 40's I had an uncle and aunt that lived near the hockey venue in Seattle. Convenient, so my old man took me to a lot of hockey games (and pro wrestling). I was a wee lad, but recall a lot of serious fights, often hard for the refs to break up.

....yep....I think the Gumper was the last not to wear a mask............I remember him well when he still played for Rangers in the late 50s/early 60s.....he was a fantastic goalie on a very mediocre team........recall one 4 game stretch circa 1962 where he made 192 saves.....believe it or not, he was a skinny 145 pounder when he first came up.....yet struggled with his weight his whole career.....won Vezina with Canadiens late in his career.........one of the all time characters in the sport.......when a reporter in NY asked him what team gave him the most trouble in the league, Gump replied......the Rangers
