Al-len, the typical SI thread works like one of those little towns near Sutter's Mill or Carson City. Somebody sniffs gold or silver(starts a thread), attracts a large group of prospectors(short term traders looking for a pop), saloons and gambling casinos come in(jovial interaction and information exchange), then the panning starts to get a little thin(the temporary curtailment of news), people get frustrated and angry(people get frustrated and angry), the saloons and casinos close(the posters sell out and leave), the boom town looks like a ghost town(the thread looks like a ghost town), the remaining town folk get angry(the remaining thread posters get angry), bandits come into town(the only posts are for the next MSFT), and the town becomes a ghost town(the thread gets barren).

The difference Al-len, as you so aptly put it, is this: The ghost towns of the 1800s still are ghost towns(the stock will come back and with it the following)
