Ed, That is by far the best letter to the editor I have seen. I particularly enjoyed this: Banning video poker isn't going to make gambling disappear any more than Prohibition made drinking disappear. Prohibition forced drinking to go underground and, in the process, turned a lot of good citizens into criminals. It is a lesson that Charlie Condon and David Beasley should learn: You can't legislate morality. Besides, according to national experts -- people who are opposed to gambling, I might add -- only 5 percent of those who gamble are addicted. Yet, here we are, trying to ban video poker. About 11 percent of the people who drink are alcoholics, and alcoholism breaks up families and causes death on our highways as well as other personal tragedies. Why isn't Charlie Condon out there trying to ban drinking? For that matter, why isn't he pounding down the doors of The State newspaper and demanding that you quit running the betting odds on sporting events? Printing the point spread doesn't do anything but give hundreds of thousands of South Carolinians information that makes it easier to gamble illegally. Seems to me that the attorney general ought to be fighting anything that promotes a criminal activity. But maybe I'm confused. I might add compulsive eating disorders too - I guess they would do away with Mickey D's and Whoppers. I don't even want to think about what their solution for Herpes would be! (ggg) Gary
