I think that for the folks who run this country, having an Iran-friendly government in Iraq would be flatly unacceptable. Wrong Thinking and all that.
Remember the ancient story of an old woman in [I forget the actual ancient kingdom] groaning under the draconian rule of Dionysus the tyrant? Every day she went to the temple, offering a prayer that the King might live long and be healthy. One day, the guards, bemused, asked her why she was saying prayers which so plainly went against the opinion of just about all her countryfolk. Her answer: "This evil I know and can bear. The next guy could be worse."
So... if an Islamic regime came to the fore in Iraq, the Middle East would contain an economically and militarily untouchable axis of anti-Western sentiment. Economically (like, oil) the whole Middle East may be less inclined to play ball with US economic and gov't interests. The USA, clearly aware on which side its Chevy Suburbans are buttered, will oppose this with some vigor.
