A. Sharez, let me answer the questions one at a time. Permit me to ask a simple but I think important question: Will the fact that COMS and BAY being ahead of HLIT and better connected in the US mean that once specific cable companies have used a certain supplier's products it will be difficult for them to add, mix and match products from another supplier like HLIT??? That is why HLIT is doing all the interoperability testing. They have tested their headend gear with Toshiba, the major systems integrator for TWX. That is why they are interoperable with the three major asics chip manufacturers for cable modems,Libit,STII,and Broadcom. This way no matter whose products were initially used,HLIT can be dropped into the system, and work, without question. I would like your opinion Oh Learned One Tim on Archer's comment last week that most of HLIT's business is in the optical transmission and receiving area and not so much in the headend area: Does that agree with your understanding? HLIT is the first company to test their headend gear for interoperability at Cable labs. BAY and COMS, have not tested their headend gear,as far as I know. That is what HLIT has spent the last 6 months on in Colorado, doing. Proprietary technology will not win this battle, better equipment with better durability, longevity, and scalability will win. CSCO tried to push a proprietary platform forward, and has been rubuffed. They are now heading towards a more uniform platform. BAY,COMS and HLIT are going to use the same platform. What differentiates COMS is the ATM equipment and voice integration. BAY has manufacturing capability, and cost, and the best software in the business with their Optivity Network management. As far as I know, no one has a scalable optical node, nor the expertise to produce one this year. BAY is winning the installation fight right now hands down, they have almost all of the current wins with their LANcity division. I am long BAY,and HLIT. It might be like trying to guess if both boxers, can simultaneously knock each other out in a fight. BAY is strong,I bought a lot at 20,and will hold for awhile. I believe they can become the second largest networking company, and soon challenge CSCO. They are number one in ATM,have the only gig ethernet switch available, and have a good cable modem system up and running. HLIT is taking the same road, only from a different angle, fiber optics, and is much smaller. Lets just hope the light at the end of the tunnel is coming from a Harmonic lightwaves transmitter, and not an oncoming BAY freight train. Tim
