Very true. Intermarriage was the norm for many centuries, if not millennia. Half of Ukraine - especially the eastern part - are either ethnically Russian, or intermixed. Half of the country speaks Russian as their natural first language. Towards the west, the Ukrainian language begins to sound more like Polish. For years, I didn’t believe they’ll ever go to war. But, they did. In the East, it’s a civil war. Fratricidal stuff, in essence.

The Russian empire always mistreated the Ukrainians. There were lots of grievances. Over the centuries, there were many nationalist movements and attempts at independence. Tragically, when Ukraine became independent after the dissolution of the USSR, things didn’t go well. Thugs and oligarchs remained in charge. The West often didn’t help much - by adding to the corruption. The so called “Orange Revolution” (backed by Soros) taught them how to overthrow results of an election.

It’s a long story, mostly not a happy story. Since 2014, they have a smoldering civil war going on in the eastern regions. Instead of remaining neutral and benefitting from trade and investments from every direction, they were manipulated into into a situation as it stands today. I doubt very much that Russia wants them. A very corrupt nation of ~45 million, with a GDP per capita roughly 1/3 of Russia’s - could be a load they wouldn’t want to carry.

Imho, ukraine would be wise to take an independent course. They have superb soil, the climate is good. An educated population. They could feed much of the world. They need investment and some refresher training.

Russia and Ukraine have been at war for over a thousand years and the border has changed 100 times.

In Kiev you would be lucky to find someone that speaks Ukrainian.

And if they did speak Ukrainian it isn't the Ukrainian from 100 years ago it is more like Russian with a Ukrainian accent.

Having said that Russia is a viscous bully and has caused horrible suffering out of proportion to anything Ukrainians have done.

Is U.S. meddling worth risking a nuclear conflict over?
