Priests, lawyers and doctors (of medicine and psychiatry) are special and the law recognizes this with patient/client confidentiallity. The justification being that you would need to be honest with these professionals in order for them to be able to do their jobs, so we protect confidences made to them because of the greater public good served by allowing people to talk freely and with little fear of revelation (there is an exception for imminent harm.) Now I see absolutely no reason why such an exception would be necessary for a secretary, who should not be placed in the position where he or she harbors secrets worth guarding (outside of corporate secrets, which are protected by law). As for culture, I am sorry I agree with you, but I do. I think Americans are dismally ignorant of their own and other cultures. Most people have never seen an opera (except as portrayed in Loony Toons.) They have never been to a symphony or ballet (unless forced to go with a school.) And what is more they have no desire to do these things. But as you know I am an insufferable elitist and have always felt that the majority of the common folk (the plebes) do not have our delicate and refined sensibilities. You can tell a lot about a culture by their cheese. The French have brie, the Swiss have swiss, the Dutch have gouda, the Brits have Stilton and cheddar, the Germans muenster, the Greeks have feta, the Italians (true cheese romantics) with gorganzola, romano, parmesan, and what do we have??? Bland and disgusting American cheese (sometimes cheese-food) always blended and highly processed. Offensive to no one, save those wishing for some CHARACTER.
