I think it’s simple - they want a commitment that Ukraine doesn’t become a member of NATO. If they give in and allow this to happen, that would create a dangerous situation for them - and for the whole world. It will blow up sooner or later anyway. With NATO and US forces a couple of hundred miles from the former Stalingrad, southeast from Moscow - such a blowup would be less likely to be limited to conventional weaponry. That’s why I don’t think they’re bluffing. It’s not so complicated.
