Yes, I worked in Juneau for 11 years or so. I was there on 9/11 and retired a couple of years later. I managed the vegetation resource inventory. We had sample plots every four miles. Our two person crews lived on a boat that had been fitted with a helicopter deck for war in the Middle East. We flew them out to a landing spot as close as they could get to the sample location and they would take a compass from there.

We had a .375 H&H Winchester or a 12 gauge for each crew as protection against the potential for bear problems, but we never had a single problem because if the crew saw a bear from the helicopter they went to a different plot.
