Having a sequenced virus, it’s not difficult to design a messenger RNA needed to create antibodies against a targeted protein in the virus. The work is in testing - and getting approvals - and then manufacturing and distributing. But, this virus keeps changing. It worked well against the original CoViD - but not so much against Delta. Supposedly, it makes the disease milder. Ditto re Omicron. They are working on a Omicron vaccine, apparently it will be around by March. One little problem - by March, omicron will be more or less gone. It’s burning through communities like wildfire, and the cases are already in a sharp decline. Not to mention that omicron is mild and it’s not clear whether it even warrants special vaccination. So, our fearless vaccinators are in a spot of trouble. If it weren’t for the government obstinance, there would be hardly any market for their product (which is literally outdated last year’s vaccines). Imo, they will soon realize they need to do the same thing they’ve been doing with flu - for decades. Check all over the world for emerging new strains, estimate the odds for a particular strain to reach out shores - and start making vaccines pro-actively, without waiting to have millions of cases in the US. Hopefully, new strains will be even milder - and the issue will be gone.
