I think you missed the line at the bottom that explains the computation.

Indeed, I read the document top down. Like virtually every language in the world, English documents are read top down.

"Each income group excludes the previous one" would mean that the second item,"the top 50%," excludes the first item the "bottom 59%." So far, so good. For the third item, "the top 10%," not so much.

Shoulda used a bar chart...
