Yes more or less. The QR code is harmless OR NOT depending on what app you scan it with and what that app does with it. For example, what TJ referred to shows a glaring flaw in the idea of automatic, phone payment type apps that use QR codes...

Re <<But if the voice on the other end convinces you to give them your credit card. Who is at fault then? Certainly not the phone #?>>

You are correct.

My story?

Once I was setting up my geewhizbangohwhoawee bespoke gamer PC, whilst drinking coffee, and conversing with pal over the phone, and my fingers danced over the keyboard as the topic was engrossing and PC exciting.

Dialogue boxes kept popping up requiring me to click in the affirmative.

I almost never ever read instruction manuals unless and until I get deep into the weeds of trouble.

In this instance I do not know how, and I certainly should have known and did know better, but erased my hard drive in its entirety by re-formatting, drivers and all, clean swipe, as if with Brillo pad.

It was a long weekend, and I could lug the entire useless box back to the shop, or instead DIY. I chose the latter and learned a lot. After this particular machine, I went Apple, with its one-button setup.

Strange thing was, I discovered that the mind is much faster than the body. My mind told me ‘do not click on ‘YES’, but right forefinger was keen on mission accomplished, and did.

I did do good work on the liquid-cooled PC. Took me 72-hours to get it ‘as good as new’, for a nano second mistake.
