As per the quote above, even the president sometimes shows up to participate. The word doesn’t come from Lithuanian, at least not directly. It’s named after a town - and a big lake - in central Russia, roughly midway between Moscow and Petersburg. en.m.wikipedia.org There is a word “Valdai” in Lithuanian, but it’s more commonly a verb. In this form, it literally means “own” - like in “you own”. In modern use, a term “Valdyba” means management (noun). A somewhat archaic female name “Valdone” means something like “the lady of the house”. The grand duchy of Lithuania, some centuries back, used to control large parts of today's European Russia. So, maybe they named the lake and the region. That’s not impossible… but who cares.
