Alan: That was a GREAT POST!!
I have only taken a quick look at the links (and intend on going over it in more detail) but it would seem that what these companies may/can(?) do with existing films may vastly increase the number of films that can be shown in an IMAX theatre. My first cut says this is very good news indeed!

Anyone else have an opinion on this?

I am getting a very good feeling about IMAX. I am concidering taking a position prior to announcement of the next quarter earnings.

Alan,
I remember reading in an article about Imax that many 2D movies could easily be converted to 3D and shown at IMAX theaters and that this was an avenue Imax was exploring. The only ones I can remember being discussed were "Toy Story" and I think maybe "The Lost World". Definitely an exciting prospect. I will try and find that article an post the relevant portions maybe tomorrow.

Here's some snippets from a couple of articles concerning transforming 2D movies into 3D Imax.

The Toronto Star Aug. 24, 1997

"He [Gelfond, co-CEO] says animated films that use a digital format can be transformed into 3-D Imax. So, Toy Story could be seen in an Imax theater and so could the computer generated dinosaurs in Lost World . Gelfond says he's exploring opportunities like that with Walt Disney Co., and Steven Spielberg's Dreamworks SKG."

Business Week March 31, 1997

"Wechsler [co-CEO] says evolving digital technology will soon give Imax the ability to produce versions of films such as Twister and Independence Day ."
