Golfer,
They were NEVER recommended until Covid.
They were commonly seen in Asian nations well before COVID. If you were sick with the flu or the common cold, you would put on a mask so that you don't go around infecting others. Others would understand and not look at you funny.

This was not the case in America, where if you wore a mask, people would try and stay away from you thinking that you're a walking epidemic.

As for masks being a form of tOrTuRe ... okay. Whatever you say, snowflake.
